No longer thinking
I wrote something really similar to this over at DeviantArt, but I might as well just post this here as well.
My rabbit, Benny, died last night. It was bit sudden; he wasn't moving much yesterday morning, so I took him to the vet--where I found out that he had a blockage in his GI tract. He was probably in a lot of pain, and supposedly pain is very bad for rabbits, as they can go into shock easily from it.
Anyway, I heard back from the Vet around 10:00 or so this morning, saying that he didn't make it through the night.
So, that's kind of it it. His cage and everything has been cleaned up, and he's been buried, so it's almost like he wasn't even there at all, which makes it worse, almost.

My first real pet was a rabbit. She was named Holly because her poop looked like black holly berries. I don't know exactly how it happened, but somehow she ended up breaking her leg irrepairably. The vet said it was a choice between amputation or putting her to sleep. I was ten years old, sobbing gallons of tears a minute, and my dad said I had to make the choice. He influenced it heavily though by explaining that if Holly lost her leg, chances were more than likely the shock of the surgery would probably be a more painful death than just putting her to sleep. That is still one of the hardest things I've ever done.
But what do you mean about his cage? You came home and everything was already taken care of? Or did you get a chance to take care of Benny yourself? I'm sorry... I'm really not trying to pick at a scab or anything, but I feel really sad for you. *hugs*

I got my first rabbit when I was five or six. I remember being particularly uninformed about rabbits at the time, or how to even act with a pet other than a dog. Her name was Violet, and she started biting after awhile, so we got a new rabbit and let Violet run loose in the yard. If I remember correctly, she was probably out there for about a year, and then we took her to a park and let her go.
Yes, the cage was already cleaned up. I helped finish up the last of the stuff, and I was there for the burial. And it's fine to ask. It's been a week now, and I feel much better about it now, even though I was rather upset the first couple of days.
*hugs back* Thanks. And sorry I didn't get back to you sooner; I haven't had internet access for the past week or so.
